LIFEGUARDING

American Red Cross Lifeguard Course Prerequisites:
✔ Ages 15 and older (must be 15 before the last day of the class)
✔ Able to swim 150 yards continuously (using front crawl and/or breaststroke)
✔ Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
✔ Complete a timed brick retrieval:
• Swim 20 yards
• Dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7-10 feet of water
• Return the brick to the starting point within 1 minute, 40 seconds
These prerequisites ensure participants are physically prepared to meet the demands of lifeguarding class, including performing rescues and responding to emergencies.

Start Your Lifeguarding Journey with the YWCA Junior Guard Program!
Are you 13 or 14 years old and interested in becoming a lifeguard in the future? The YWCA of Lubbock’s Junior Guard Program is the perfect way to gain real experience, develop leadership skills, and learn the basics of lifeguarding—all while having fun in the pool!
Participants will complete a hands-on training course where they’ll learn water rescue techniques, CPR basics, and the responsibilities of a professional lifeguard. After successfully completing the course, Junior Guards will receive a YWCA Junior Guard shirt and hat and have the exciting opportunity to volunteer alongside our lifeguard team for the summer, gaining valuable on-deck experience.
Course Prerequisites:
✔ Ages 13-14
✔ Able to swim 200 yards in under 30 minutes (This program does not teach basic swimming skills—participants should already be confident swimmers.)
