Want to join our Mission to help us serve the youth and make a difference in the Lubbock community?
Volunteers are an essential part of youth sports and we need you to help make our programs a success. Whether you have a child on the team or not, you are welcome to apply to become a volunteer in our youth sports programs.
Overview:
Typically, youth sports are anywhere from 7 to 10 weeks in length. The time commitment is approximately 2-4 hours per week, one 1-hour practices a game week, and games on Saturdays. Our programs are designed to educate youth about the specific sport, while emphasizing development in teamwork, participation, and sportsmanship. Players learn skills and lessons that help them succeed both on and off the field/court. Coaches are to assist in providing young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action while developing the skills necessary to become successful players.
Incentives for Coaching:
- A credit will be applied to the recreation account to be used towards a future program at the end of the season.
- Opportunity to request up to 3 players on your team not including your own child.
- Informational materials, coaches’ clinics, and/or coaches’ orientation/season kickoff.
- Ability to pick practice time (based on age and space availability).
- Obtain volunteer hours.
Coaching Requirements:
- Applicant must be 18 years of age.
- Abide by the Code of Conduct
- Coaches are expected to attend the coaches meeting prior to the start of each season and are responsible for contacting their teams after the meeting.
- Coaching requires knowledge of the game, rules and the ability to demonstrate and communicate proper skills and drills.
- Deal professionally and tactfully with players, their parents, other coaches, officials, spectators, and recreation staff.
- Work with no supervision, and attend all practices and games
- Communicate effectively with parents on the practice schedule, game schedule, pictures day, end of team party and other misc. items that arise throughout the season
Volunteer Application Process:
- Application (Each Season) – All coaches must submit a Youth Volunteer Coach application through the An application is required for every coach prior to the coach’s meeting each season.
- Background Check (Yearly) – Upon submission of the application Youth Basketball Coach (Volunteer) – YWCA of Lubbock – Career Page, Human Resources will email the background screening information, which will be processed through ESR. Background checks are required annually.
- Reference Checks (First-Time Applicants Only) – Coaches must provide three reference checks: one personal and two professional. This is only required the first time applying.
- Child Abuse Prevention Training (Yearly) – Coaches must complete a 30-minute online training and pass a 20-question quiz annually before coaching.
